Mufasa: The Lion King is a 2024 animated musical drama directed by Barry Jenkins. It features some talented actors including Aaron Pierre, Kelvin Harrison Jr, Tiffany Boone, Beyonce and several others who gave a voice to the characters. The story begins with a young Mufasa who tragically becomes separated from his parents. He meets Taka who is proclaimed to be a future king of the pride. They develop a strong friendship and eventually meet a stray lioness Sarabi, her scout Zazu and enigmatic Rafiki who is wise beyond his years. They encounter challenges on their journey into the land of Milele, where they hope to find a new beginning.

The movie visuals were excellent, and the animals were quite expressive. The music was great but quite different from the popular songs from the previous Lion King movies. Some of the songs featured in the musical drama gained a lot of popularity on social media, especially ‘I Always Wanted a Brother’. This song perfectly captured the bond between the young cubs Mufasa and Taka, and how their friendship grew as close as brothers. But was their bond strong enough to overcome the test of jealousy and loss?

Although, I had always envisioned the story took place somewhere in Africa, initially I was surprised to hear the animals speak mostly with American and British accents, but then remembered at the core, it is an American movie.

Mufasa: The Lion King gives us more insight to certain mysteries like how Taka became ‘Scar’ and the reason for the rift in their friendship. As the movie explores themes on jealousy, love, family and friendship. The audience can certainly find a relatable moment where they feel more connected to the characters and their struggles. So, I will recommend watching this movie.
