Uglies is a 2024 American science fiction, action and adventure movie directed by McG and written by Jacob Forman, Vanessa Taylor and Whit Anderson. It is based on the novel by Scott Westerfeld. Some of the talented cast include Joey King, Keith Powers, Laverne Cox, Chase Stokes and many others.

In a futuristic society, people are separated into two categories: The Uglies and The Pretties. The transformation to being the perfect version of yourself is enforced at the age of 16. This was the ultimate solution to solving the inequalities which the previous human society called ‘The Rusties’ had faced.

A young girl, Tally (aka Squint) and her best friend Peris (aka Nose) are on the verge of becoming Pretties. As Peris is slightly older, he undergoes the transformation first. They make a promise to meet in a month. But their friendship is not quite the same as it used to be. Tally forms a new friendship with Shay who encourages her to think outside the box and explore a new world called The Smoke where a revolution is being led by David, a place where people are allowed to be freethinkers. Will Tally join the revolution, or does she simply was to be… Pretty?

There was a strong theme of striving for physical perfection, especially in a society where looks were prioritised over everything else, to the point where human relationships took a back seat and nothing felt real. It is a sad reality even in the modern world. On a lighter note, every member of the cast was ridiculously good looking so I found it ironic they were being called ‘Ugly’ for the movie’s purpose! I mean, have you seen these people? Come on!

I loved Shay’s character. Her enthusiasm and strong conviction was refreshing. At some point, her friendship with Tally seemed even more real than what Tally had with Perris. I suppose this is because the audience only had memories of Tally and Perris to dwell on, but on the other hand, we were able to watch Tally’s friendship with Shay develop. David’s character was initially a mystery to unfold but I was not disappointed when he finally revealed himself. He was a strong character that helped to keep others grounded, accepting, supportive and a strong leader.

Uglies will keep you glued to the edge of your seat and although a part of you may suspect the twists and turns to come, it is still enjoyable to watch. The movie ended with a cliff hanger, so I would hope that means there would be a sequel. I definitely recommend seeing this movie.
